Overview
An I-123 MIBG scan is a specialized nuclear imaging scan that uses a radioactive tracer to help physicians locate and detect adrenal gland tumors and certain neuroendocrine tumors in the body. This diagnostic scan is particularly useful for identifying conditions such as pheochromocytomas, neuroblastomas, and paragangliomas by tracking how the MIBG tracer concentrates in abnormal tissue.

A radioactive material will be injected into your body. Pictures are taken at 24 hours and possibly 48 hours following your injection. Prior to the scan and sometimes after your scan, you will be given drops that block the thyroid from absorbing the radioactive material.
